Visionary Art reviews exhibitions and writes about artists working away from the capital: in Wales, in the English regions, in Scotland and Ireland, and across Europe. If the work is good and nobody in London has noticed yet, we want to hear about it.
What we are looking for
- Exhibition reviews, 700 to 1,200 words, of shows that are open now or opening soon. Tell us the venue, the dates and why this show.
- Studio visits and artist features, 1,000 to 1,800 words, built on the work itself: how it is made, what it is made of, where it has been shown.
- Essays on painting, sculpture, photography, craft and the visionary and outsider traditions, where one argument is followed through real works.
- Exhibition news from galleries and museums outside London. A press release is welcome as a tip; we write our own text.
If you are an artist
Send six to eight images of recent work with title, year, medium and dimensions for each, a short statement in your own words, and a note of where the work can be seen in person. We look at everything we are sent and choose on the strength of the work.
If you are a writer
Send the idea, not the finished piece: one paragraph on what you want to write and why now, and two links to something you have published. First-time writers are welcome if the paragraph is good.
How we work
- We answer within about three weeks.
- One-off contributions are unpaid at present. With regular contributors and columnists we agree a fee. We never charge artists or galleries for coverage.
- Writers keep their copyright. We ask for first publication in the UK and the right to keep the piece in our archive.
- What we write about an artist or an exhibition is our own view. Subjects do not see or approve the text before it appears.
- Every image needs a credit and your confirmation that you may share it.
