Presence and the Limits of Reproduction

Every painting is already available online. The National Gallery in London publishes its Vermeers at high resolution, the Rijksmuseum lets you zoom into Rembrandt’s brushstrokes until you can see individual hairs of his brush. If the purpose of looking is information, the screen has already won. But the purpose of looking is not only information. The screen strips out scale, surface, texture, the body’s relationship to the object, and the social fact of looking alongside others. Digital access democratises, and that is real. The screen is a map. The gallery is the territory.

The Apparent Redundancy

Google Arts and Culture hosts over eight million items. The Rijksmuseum’s Rijksstudio offers public domain downloads at resolutions that show the weave of the canvas. The Uffizi has virtual tours of its corridors. The Musée d’Orsay has made its entire collection searchable online. The Hermitage has produced a continuous-shot video tour lasting over five hours, moving through its halls. The Louvre offers a “Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass” virtual reality experience. The British Museum’s collection online has over four million objects catalogued with detailed photography.

There is no shortage of access. A student in Lagos can study the Ghent Altarpiece in greater detail than most visitors to Saint Bavo Cathedral will ever see. The panels are behind glass, lit dimly, distant. The digital image, zoomable and well-lit, offers more visual data than the physical encounter in many cases.

This makes the physical museum seem redundant. If the image is the point, the museum is an expensive delivery system. It is slow, it requires travel, it charges admission, it has crowds. The screen is faster, cheaper, and often higher in resolution.

What the Screen Strips Out

The screen removes scale. The “Mona Lisa” is seventy-seven centimetres by fifty-three. The “Wedding at Cana” by Veronese, which hangs opposite it in the Louvre, is almost seven metres by ten. On a phone screen, both images might appear at the same size. The relationship between the viewer’s body and the object disappears. You cannot tell that the “Winged Victory of Samothrace” stands over two metres tall on the prow of a stone ship, that you look up at her from the base of the Daru staircase, that her wings extend past your peripheral vision when you stand close. The digital image of her is a shape on a flat plane.

The screen removes texture. The Rijksmuseum’s photography of “The Night Watch” is excellent. You can see the impasto, the raised ridges of paint. But you cannot see the craquelure catching light at an angle, the way the surface holds centuries of varnish and cracking, the physical evidence that this object has been alive for almost four hundred years. The digital image is a representation of the painting’s appearance. The painting is an object with a surface, and that surface is part of what it is.

  • The screen removes the body’s relationship to the object: you cannot step back to see a painting from a distance and then move close to examine detail. The zoom function simulates this but inverts it. You zoom with your fingers, not your feet. The physical act of approaching a painting changes what you see, and the screen collapses that into a gesture.
  • The screen removes the social fact of looking alongside others. At the Louvre, people gather around the “Mona Lisa” and take photographs. They queue. They crane their necks. This is not a failure of the museum experience. It is the museum experience. The painting is a social object, and its meaning is partly constituted by the fact that people travel to see it.
  • The screen removes the spatial context. A painting in a gallery is next to other paintings. It is in a room with specific dimensions, specific light, a specific relationship to the works around it. The Frick Collection in New York has rehung its rooms, and the conversations between paintings have changed. The digital image of a painting is always alone.

The screen also removes time. You spend seconds on a digital image. You scroll past it. In a museum, you stand. You look. You walk away and come back. The average time spent in front of the “Mona Lisa” is estimated at fifteen seconds, but the visit to the Louvre takes hours, and the painting exists in that duration.

The Counter-Argument

The digital case is strong and must be taken seriously. The Rijksmuseum reports over twelve million visits to its website annually, compared to roughly two million physical visitors. The National Gallery in London had over four million website users view its collection online during 2022. The British Museum’s online collection receives over four million visits per year. These numbers dwarf physical attendance.

Access matters. A person in a rural area of India, a student in São Paulo, a disabled person who cannot travel has access to images they would otherwise never see. The Google Art Project, launched in 2011, partnered with 151 institutions across forty countries. The Smithsonian Open Access initiative released 2.8 million images into the public domain in 2020. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has made over 492,000 images open access.

This is not trivial. It changes who can study art, who can write about it, who can teach it. Before digital reproduction, studying art history required access to physical libraries with slide collections or expensive printed reproductions. Now a phone in Nairobi has better access to the history of European painting than the Bodleian Library did in 1950.

The democratisation argument also points to the economics of physical museums. The Louvre costs twenty-two euros for admission. A trip to Paris from outside Europe costs thousands. The museum is already a privileged space. The screen does not create inequality. It reduces it.

There is also the question of conservation. The Lascaux caves are closed to the public. The replica, Lascaux IV, receives over 200,000 visitors a year. The original would be destroyed by the breath and humidity of that many people. The digital reproduction of fragile objects, from the Dead Sea Scrolls to the Bayeux Tapestry, is a preservation strategy, not a compromise.

The counter-argument is not wrong. It is incomplete. It assumes that the image is the whole work, and that the image can be delivered by a screen. But the image is not the whole work.

Resolution – The Map and the Territory

The screen is a map. The gallery is the territory.

A map of London tells you where the British Museum is. It shows you the streets, the layout, the relationship between Bloomsbury and Holborn. It is useful. It is accurate. But you cannot walk through it. You cannot smell it. You cannot feel the rain on your face or hear the traffic on Southampton Row. The map is not the city. The map is a tool for understanding the city.

The digital image is a tool for understanding the work of art. It shows you what the painting looks like, its composition, its colour, its subject. It is useful for study, for comparison, for teaching. But it is not the work.

The work is a physical object in a physical space. Mark Rothko’s “Seagram Murals” at Tate Modern are in a room designed by the artist. The lighting is low. The walls are grey. The paintings hang in a specific configuration that Rothko specified. The room is dim because Rothko wanted the viewer’s eyes to adjust, to see the paintings slowly, to enter the dark and stay. The digital images of these paintings on the Tate website are bright, well-lit, and clear. They show the paintings better than the room does. But they do not show what Rothko made. Rothko made a room. The paintings are part of it.

The physical experience of art is not nostalgia. It is not a preference for the old way of doing things. It is a recognition that art is made of matter, that matter has properties, and that those properties are part of the meaning.

When you stand in front of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” at the Prado, you see a painting that is over two metres wide. You see the surface, which is cracked and aged. You see the colours, which have shifted over five centuries. You see it in a room with other Bosch paintings, with other works from the period. You see it with other people, who are also looking. You have walked through Madrid to get there. You have queued. You are tired. Your feet hurt. All of this is part of the experience, not a distraction from it.

The digital image gives you the painting. The gallery gives you the experience of the painting. Both matter. But they are not the same thing, and confusing them is a category error.

The screen is a remarkable tool. It has transformed access, study, and teaching. It has made the history of art available to anyone with a connection. But it has not made the museum redundant. It has made the museum legible. You go to the museum with more knowledge, more context, more preparation than ever before. You go because the image is not enough. You go because the painting is there, and you are here, and the distance between you matters.
